Curriculum Intent

At Flamborough School our curriculum is rooted in our vision statement ‘Growing with God and Striving for Excellence’ and the school values of’ respect, resilience and responsibility’.

Our curriculum has been designed to provide opportunities and experiences to develop children socially, emotionally, and spiritually. It focuses on academic success, personal development, physical development, and well-being, to enable pupils to become confident, well-rounded individuals. All children irrespective of background will receive the same relevant curriculum which exposes them to cultural experiences beyond the local environment and celebrates the differences and richness each child can bring.

We will provide a constructive approach to learning which is child led and appreciates each pupil’s uniqueness and ensures all learners have an active role in their educational journey.

Our vision is to create independent, resilient, and confident learners who, with high aspirations, will contribute to society and may become leaders of the future.

Our practice follows the principles of effective learning, including:

  • Exploring
  • Positive attitude
  • Involvement and concentration
  • Embracing challenge and developing resilience
  • Enjoy achieving
  • Creative, critical and independent thinking
  • Linking learning
  • Determination to complete and improve
  • Choosing ways to do things

Implementation

The following aspects drive our curriculum:

Child led- following the interests, experiences and questions our children bring with them to school. We also ensure that our exciting curriculum is relevant to the ever changing needs of our children and inspires them to learn.

Through our curriculum, we will teach social and emotional skills as well as how to keep physically and mentally healthy.

Enriched curriculum that challenges and excites, both inside and outside of the classroom. It extends beyond the classroom through extra-curricular opportunities.

Community links which helps pupils to become active and responsible members of our school, the local community and beyond. As this is done, we encourage pupils to develop their personal values and qualities and be respectful and responsible.

We have sequenced our curriculum so that knowledge and skills within each subject are taught progressively and show continuity so that pupils can build upon what they already know and understand. It aims to deepen knowledge, skills and understanding through the curriculum content, application of skills and development of understanding across a range of contexts and subjects

Our academic curriculum uses both the EYFS and the National Curriculum as a basis for content and expectations. We build upon this to meet the needs of all pupils and fully equip children as well-rounded individuals prepared for the modern world. Our curriculum supports pupils to reach high standards of literacy and maths skills through specific teaching and application of skills to learning across the curriculum. Staff and children will be involved in creating their topics which will allow the children to develop a thirst for knowledge and an eagerness to learn.

The school follows the National Curriculum as a framework of what to teach all children across the school so that they all have access to and experience of the same basic knowledge and understanding in a range of subjects.

The National Curriculum provides an outline of core knowledge and.teachers use this as the starting point when planning an enhanced National Curriculum that is enaging, varied and purposeful. This leads onto developing exciting, stimulating and challenging lessons to promote the development of the children’s knowledge, understanding and skills as part of the school’s wider school curriculum.

Impact

Progress is measured through the careful analysis of the application of skills across the curriculum showing how acquisition of knowledge is enhanced by expectations to evidence quality thinking and demonstrate understanding.

All staff are involved with a consistent cycle of monitoring to gauge the impact of curriculum design. We carefully check pupil’s growing knowledge across the curricuulum throughbook scrutiny, learning walks, through discussions with pupils and periodic tests.

When measuring attainment and progress, we always consider starting points of children but also ensure that we are striving for it to be in line with or exceed age related expectations.

We know that the curriculum is successful when our pupils show that they have enjoyed learning, don’t give up, show high motivation to succeed and achieve and are equipped with the knowledge and skills that they have built upon over time.
