At Flamborough School, we aim to develop positive attitudes to mathematics and enquiry, where our pupils develop the competence and confidence in mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills that can be related to everyday life, and other curricular areas.

Through our teaching, we aim to help pupils develop the ability to work independently, and cooperatively, solving problems through decision making and discussion thus improving and developing their communication skills.

Through varied and frequent practice, pupils will develop the ability to solve ever increasing complex problems, reason, think logically and to work systematically and accurately. The school uses White Rose Maths, which helps children develop their conceptual understanding of mathematics by using concrete objects, pictorial representations and abstract thinking

Children enjoy being challenged and are given the opportunity to develop and practise their learning. Children are encouraged to work in groups and to support each other. The classroom environment provides a safe place for children to discuss their methods and reasoning. During lessons children are encouraged to ask and answer questions and to seek help and support when necessary.

Where appropriate mathematics is taught using a cross curricular approach and the outdoor environment is used as a stimulus for enhancing learning.
